The SOS Children’s Village Meru is located in Kenya’s Eastern Province, Meru central district. It is situated just north of the equator, 8km from Meru town, next door to the Kenya Methodist University. The 10 acre plot on which the SOS Children’s Village is constructed was kindly donated by the Kenya Methodist University and construction was funded by the Nationale Postcode Loterij of Netherlands. The village compound borders the Meru central forest on the lower slopes of Mount Kenya. Elephants can occasionally be seen in the dry season when they are searching for food and water. The village has an electric fence to keep wildlife out.

The SOS Children’s Village Meru was officially opened on 8 October 2005 and the current village director is Mr. Peter Wambugu.

The village has 13 family houses, each with a capacity of 10 children. The children attend the SOS Kindergarten, located within the village and three community schools. The oldest children are in class 6 (about 11 years old) and will sit for their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education in 2012.

We have no youth house yet but plans are underway to start construction of a boys’ house by 2012.

Entrenching and living the SOS philosophy: since the village opened we have managed to fully develop the four pillars of the village, mother, bother and sisters, house and village. Families are supporting each other and the children have now learnt to appreciate each other as siblings regardless of their back grounds
Community integration: The village has integrated very well with the immediate community and the facility is well received by the community. There is a lot of community good will whenever we call on them for support or participation in our activities
